Chris Mueller's Hibs transfer exit confirmed as Ben Kensell admits American couldn't cope with Scottish football

Chris Mueller has officially returned to MLS to join Chicago Fire, Hibs have confirmed.

The American striker only arrived at Easter Road in January and was tipped for big things under Shaun Maloney.

But he only managed six starts - his last coming against Hearts in the 3-1 defeat at Tynecastle.

His only goal for the club came in the Scottish Cup against Arbroath as he struggled to adapt to the Scottish game.

It had been widely reported he would return to MLS and that has now been confirmed by the Easter Road club who say he has joined Chicago Fire for an undisclosed fee.

And Chief Executive Ben Kensell admits that Scottish football's "pace and physicality" was too much for the former Orlando City star.

He said: “Unfortunately this move didn’t work out the way the club or Chris wanted.

“Chris has worked extremely hard in training since he arrived but has found it difficult to adapt to the pace and physicality of the Scottish Premiership, which has severely limited his game time.

“Ultimately, he wants to play football regularly and when the opportunity came about for him to play for his home-town side, it was something he didn’t want to turn down and we were happy to work with all parties to make this happen.

“For us, it was vital that this deal made complete sense for the club and alongside this, it has also freed up a significant amount financially that the incoming manager will be able to use to mould the squad in their way.

“We thank Chris for all his efforts during his time with us and wish him all the best at Chicago Fire.”
