Chinese maglev train smashes its own world record for acceleration

  • An experimental maglev (magnetic levitation) train in China has broken its own world record for acceleration.
  • The 1.1-tonne vehicle accelerated from zero to 800 km/h in 5.3 seconds along a 1 km test track in Hubei province.
  • Researchers demonstrated that the train could come to a smooth, controlled stop within roughly 200 metres using an advanced braking system.
  • It marked the third time in six months that the same train had broken the world record for short-distance maglev acceleration.
  • While not currently suitable for human passengers, researchers hope the underlying principles will eventually lead to launch systems for rockets and fighter jets.
