A Chinese college student went viral after he posted a social media video about his experience as an "international commuter," making a 5,000-mile, 13-hour commute to complete his last semester at RMIT University in Melbourne, Australia.
"I found that the flight routes between China and Australia are frequent, with multiple airlines operating, so I gave it a try ... It turned out to be quite feasible and I haven't encountered any major issues," Guangli Xu, 28, told SBS Mandarin.
Xu began attending the university eight years ago, but since August, he has commuted 11 times, which each round trip costing about $1,500 and requiring approximately 72 hours of travel, SBS Mandarin reported.
The 28-year-old posted a video about his experience to the Chinese social media app Douyin, which ended up going viral.
While Xu said the commute's associated expenses are comparable to living in Melbourne, he still prefers it to living in the Australian city.
"I prefer the environment and convenience in China. After living abroad for so many years, I also wanted to spend more time with my family," Xu told the outlet.
