China sticks to zero-Covid policy: Tens of millions endure new lockdown

After first appearing in China more than two years ago, Covid-19 has returned to the Middle Kingdom. The country had largely succeeded in keeping infection and mortality rates in check. But in recent weeks, the Omicron variant has posed a significant challenge to the country's zero-Covid strategy. Once again, harsh lockdowns and restrictions are being enforced. We take a closer look.

Meanwhile, uncertainty over the war in Ukraine is raising prices everywhere, including in Japan, which has long been stuck in deflation. The price rise in Japan is still a lot smaller than in many other places though. The main reason for this is the country's slow economic recovery and even slower wage growth after two "lost decades", leaving Japan in a deflationary spiral. Our Tokyo correspondents Louis Belin, Justin McCurry, Constantin Simon and Yuko Sano report.

Also in this edition, we look at the battle taking place in India between two of the world's richest men. Amazon's Jeff Bezos and Indian business magnate Mukesh Ambani are locked in a fight over Future Group, a cash-strapped Indian conglomorate. After months of a legal standoff, the saga recently took a dramatic turn. FRANCE 24's Yuka Royer tells us more.
