Chimp who acts like toddler celebrates first birthday at Edinburgh Zoo

A chimp who acts just like a toddler has celebrated her first birthday.

Masindi, a critically endangered Western chimpanzee, was born on February 3, 2020 at Edinburgh Zoo.

She will celebrate today with some extra snacks shared with the other chimps including older brother Velu.

The youngest of her species to live at the award winning Budongo Trail, Masindi, was named after the closest town to the Budongo Conservation Field Station in Uganda.

A spokesman for the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland (RZSS) said: "Masindi, who will be enjoying some extra snacks with the rest of the chimp troop on her special day, is still very much a toddler, learning to walk independently, eat solid foods and play with her older brother, Velu.

"The one-year-old shares her name with the nearest town to the Budongo Conservation Field Station in Uganda where RZSS has funded vital efforts to protect chimpanzees in the Budongo forest since 2005.

"This work is made possible thanks to support from players of People's Postcode Lottery. "
