Child, 12, in critical condition after being struck by train in Prestwick

A schoolboy who was struck by a train in Prestwick last night remains in a critical condition in hospital today.

Police have launched an appeal for witnesses to the incident, which they are treating as an accident.

The boy, who was not on the track at the time he was hit, was rushed to hospital by ambulance.

We told you last night that the schoolboy was seriously injured following the incident.

Cops are now asking for anyone with information to come forward and assist their investigation.

A spokesperson for British Transport Police said: "Last night at just after 7.20pm, British Transport police officers were called to Prestwick Town railway station after reports of a 12-year-old boy being struck by a train.

"Colleagues from Police Scotland also attended.

"The Scottish Ambulance Service took the young man to hospital where he remains in a critical condition.

"The incident is currently being treated as an accident.

"If you have any information about this incident, please contact BTP by texting 61016 or calling 0800 40 50 40 quoting reference 432."
