Chiefs TE John Lovett leaves Bengals game early with shoulder injury

The Kansas City Chiefs have lost one of their tight ends for the remainder of preseason Week 1 with injury.

John Lovett, who is converting from QB to a hybrid H-Back role, has been ruled out of the game with a shoulder injury. Lovett played QB at Princeton and joined the Chiefs as an undrafted free agent in 2019. He’s been one of the standout players throughout the offseason program. He’s specifically been turning some heads at training camp, where special teams coordinator Dave Toub spoke highly of him.

The Chiefs will have to get the rest of the game done without Lovett.

So far, Lovett was 2-for-2 for 23 receiving yards. He looked good out there in his first preseason action, so losing him is a bit disappointing.

I’m wondering if this isn’t something that will have Lovett head to injured reserve for a redshirt season. I was under the impression that he could use some more development time compared some of the other TEs, considering it is his first time playing the position.

Another thing to consider is that when the Chiefs went out to see Lovett at his pro day, he was dealing with a wrist injury. Hopefully this isn’t the beginning of an injury-prone story for Lovett.
