For the fourth straight week, the Kansas City Chiefs remain the No. 2 team in USA Today’s power rankings.
As we suspected it’s going to take more than taking down the No. 5 team in the power rankings for the Chiefs to advance to become the No. 1 team. The Patriots need to slip up or the Chiefs need a dominant win, unlike anything we’ve ever seen before. Maybe that means Patrick Mahomes breaking the single-game passing record. Maybe it’s the defense stepping up and shutting out an opponent.
So what did Nate Davis have to say about the Chiefs this week? Here’s a look:
“Through 20 career games, Patrick Mahomes is greatest quarterback statistically in NFL history, and it’s not even close. Includes 60 TD throws, 115.3 rating.”
All talk of statistical regression is thrown out the window and completely forgotten with Mahomes. Now the question is whether he can be the first quarterback to throw for more than 6,000 yards in a single season. He’s currently on pace to throw for more than that.
Lost in the Mahomes mania is how the Chiefs have grown as a team in 2019. The offense is deeper than perhaps it’s ever been and the new defense is off to a good start through the first three weeks of the season.
As for the upward movement in the power rankings, I have a feeling the No. 2 is the ceiling for now. At least until the Chiefs face the Patriots in Week 14 in a game that could determine seeding and home-field advantage during the playoffs.
