Chiefs sign OT Chidi Okeke

The Kansas City Chiefs have added some new competition along the offensive line, where a team can simply never have enough depth.

According to the NFL’s transaction report, the Chiefs have signed tackle Chidi Okeke. This move comes following the release of tight end John Phillips and quarterback T.J. Linta.

Okeke went undrafted and signed with the Redskins after the 2019 NFL draft. He played collegiate football at Tennessee State after transferring from LSU. Okeke earned All-Ohio Valley Conference first team honors with his play during the 2018 season. Okeke’s stay with the Redskins lasted inside of a month before he was waived to make room for OT Adam Bisnowaty.

At 6 feet 5 and 317 pounds, Okeke could be a good fit to compete at the offensive guard position for the Chiefs. He likely has the versatility to play tackle in a pinch, but I suspect a move to the interior is in order for this player. Okeke was impressive during the Tennessee State pro day, posting a 5.1-second 40-yard dash and a 29-inch vertical.

Okeke hails from Anambra, Nigeria, and several other players in the Chiefs’ locker room are of Nigerian descent. This includes several he’ll be facing on the defensive line. Having that common thread will certainly help him integrate quickly into the Chiefs’ locker room.

The Chiefs still have a free roster spot following the signing of Okeke. It’s likely that will be filled before the end of the week.
