Chiefs sign LB D’Juan Hines following mandatory minicamp tryout

The Kansas City Chiefs have signed one more tryout player following their mandatory minicamp.

Two tryout players took to social media to announce they had signed before the transactions were made official. In today’s NFL transaction report both of those signings were made official, but there was also a third player to sign a deal with the Chiefs.

Linebacker D’Juan Hines has signed with the Chiefs after impressing during  three days at mandatory minicamp. He was among the six players the Chiefs had brought in to work for the team.

After going undrafted and spending time with the Los Angeles Chargers during 2018, Hines didn’t make roster cuts for the Chiefs’ AFC West rival. He was picked up by the Cleveland Browns, and spent most of the 2018 season with them. There he appeared in 13 games, and was a standout special teams player, but he didn’t get much play on defense. He had four total tackles on the season.

Hines played college football at the University of Houston, where he was highly productive during his senior season. He totaled 110 tackles, 6.5 tackles for loss, an interception and three forced fumbles in 2017. At 6 feet 1 and 235 pounds, Hines has intriguing size to play either of the outside linebacker spots.

The Chiefs waived former Texas linebacker Gary Johnson recently, so it appears they may have been looking for a different skillset, and perhaps more NFL experience at the position. Given Hines experience on special teams, perhaps that was an area that Johnson was struggling which prompted his exit.

With Hines joining the team the 90-man offseason roster is now full as the Chiefs begin their break ahead of training camp.
