Chiefs release WR Cody Thompson from practice squad to add P Jack Fox

The Kansas City Chiefs have made a minor transaction on Tuesday.

According to the NFL’s official transaction report the Chiefs have released WR Cody Thomspon from the practice squad. In a corresponding move, Kansas City signed Punter Jack Fox to the practice squad. Both Thompson and Fox joined the Chiefs as undrafted free agents following the 2019 NFL draft. Fox a local prospect hailing from St. Louis, Missouri and Thompson a talented receiver out of the University of Toledo.

Neither Thompson or Fox made it through 53-man roster cuts for the Chiefs. Both players were released and only Thompson re-signed with the team via way of the practice squad. One reason the Chiefs may have opted to make this move if because the Ravens were circling Fox and had him in for a workout on Tuesday.

The Chiefs currently had three receivers on the practice squad including veteran Gehrig Dieter and preseason standout Jody Fortson Jr. That number of receivers alone made Thompson expendable. This won’t be a popular move among fans as Thompson was a fan favorite during his time in Kansas City.

Dustin Colquitt remains the Chiefs’ starting punter and is currently performing at a high level. It doesn’t appear that he’s been injured or that there’s a need to have a backup punter available. It’s clear Kansas City has an eye toward the future with Fox. Despite some struggles during training camp and the preseason, there’s something with Fox that they’re interested in developing.
