Chiefs re-sign CB Dakari Monroe

The Kansas City Chiefs have brought back an undrafted free agent that signed with the team, but was waived following rookie minicamp.

San Jose State defensive back Dakari Monroe has re-signed with the Chiefs according to the NFL’s transaction report. Monroe joined the Chiefs as an undrafted free agent following the 2019 NFL draft, along with 16 other players.

Monroe was a standout for the Spartans during the 2018 season. He recorded over 50 total tackles, four interceptions and 14 passes defended. Monroe has experience playing both nickel and outside corner, which makes his skillset quite appealing to the Chiefs. He was also a standout special teams player during his first several seasons with San Jose State. His performance in 2018 earned him an opportunity with the Chiefs right out of the gate.

He was one of three cornerbacks to sign with the Chiefs following the draft, but he was replaced after his performance at rookie minicamp. The Chiefs have decided to bring Monroe back because they had an open roster spot from the retirement of Martrell Spaight. It’s clear that he left enough of an impression during rookie minicamp to receive another opportunity in Kansas City.

It’ll be interesting to see if the Chiefs will truly give him a chance to compete. It’s also possible that the return of Monroe will be more of a placeholder scenario for a future transaction by the team.
