Chiefs OC Matt Nagy praised WR Justyn Ross’ development at training camp

The legend of Kansas City Chiefs receiver Justyn Ross continues to grow with every update from training camp. The undrafted free agent from Clemson has been on the roster since last season but hasn’t played due to injury.

His fantastic collegiate tape was almost forgotten due to his relegation to the sideline, but as he is finally healthy in 2023, Ross seeks to make an impact in Kansas City’s prolific offense. Chiefs offensive coordinator Matt Nagy has noticed Ross’ progression and told reporters on Wednesday his thoughts on the prospect’s potential in the team’s talent-rich group of receivers.

“I think it’s gonna be fun this preseason to see the amount of players and competition that we have in that room,” Nagy said. “They all come in different sizes. And [Ross is] one that’s a bigger wide receiver. But when you watch [Ross], he really excels at route running.

“Last year, it was almost kind of treated like a redshirt year for him. And you know, [he was] mentally in the meetings. Now [he is] physically coming back out here… learning his timing, for Pat [Patrick Mahomes] to understand how he runs routes, and for him to understand how to run the routes.”

Ross missed last season recovering from foot surgery but did participate in meetings and helped Kansas City prepare for games in the Chiefs’ film room.

“So it’s going to be immense growth for him in a good way. I related it to Skyy Moore,” Nagy concluded. “Moore last year came in, man; he was just drinking out of a fire hydrant. There was a lot of stuff coming in at him, and you can’t play fast when it’s hard to play fast as a rookie. Now you get a second year. And it’s somewhat that way for Ross.”

The jury is out on whether the training camp highlights will translate to success during games, but Ross’ emergence is something for fans to be excited about heading into the preseason.
