Chiefs fall to No. 3 in USA Today power rankings following Week 5

The Kansas City Chiefs were dealt their first loss of the season during Sunday Night Football’s Week 5 matchup with the Indianapolis Colts.

It was an ugly game for the Chiefs, who struggled to get anything going on offense. Both sides of the ball dealt with significant injuries throughout the game. In the end, it was too much for the Chiefs to overcome in a 60-minute football game.

Up until this point, the Chiefs had held the No. 2 spot in the USA Today’s weekly power rankings, behind only the New England Patriots. As expected with a loss, the Chiefs fell in USA Today’s latest iteration of their NFL power rankings. Here’s a look at what Nate Davis pontificated this week:

“Talent is undeniable, but so are emerging weaknesses — Pat Mahomes’ ankle, receivers and their timing getting disrupted and defense bludgeoned for 569 rushing yards over last three weeks.”

Really, Davis is right on the money with the Chiefs. The talent on the team is undeniable, but they need to get their best players on the field. The return of Tyreek Hill should help and it could be coming this week. At the same time he won’t help the protection issues or penalty problems. He certainly won’t help the run defense or mental mistakes on the opposite side of the ball.

Things don’t get any easier for the Chiefs facing potent defensive fronts in a 10-day stretch between the Houston Texans in Week 6 and the Denver Broncos in Week 7. They’ll have to tighten things up in a very short amount of time otherwise they could risk a losing spiral before their Sunday Night Football matchup with the Packers in Week 8.
