Chick-fil-A targeted in bill to open Sundays at rest stops

New York lawmakers propose bill to force Chick-fil-A to open on Sundays.

New York State lawmakers have recently set their sights on the popular fast-food chain Chick-fil-A, with a new bill that could potentially change their longstanding practice of being closed on Sundays. The proposed legislation, known as the New York Restaurant Rest Act, would enforce the requirement for all food establishments at thruway rest stops to remain open seven days a week, thus directly impacting Chick-fil-A.

Chick-fil-A, the third largest national fast food chain in the United States, has gained notoriety for its founder's public stance against gay marriage. This controversy has been a point of contention for some individuals and groups, leading to scrutiny over the chain's policies. New York State Assembly member Tony Simone, one of the co-sponsors of the bill, highlighted the need for restaurants to be open on Sundays, stating that travelers frequently use the thruway on that day.

Currently, Chick-fil-A operates in ten out of the twenty-seven recently renovated rest areas across New York State. However, the chain's closure on Sundays poses a challenge for the New York thruway official's guidelines, which require Apple Green, the operator of these rest stops, to have both hot and cold food options available 24/7 at all locations.

Acknowledging Chick-fil-A's strict adherence to remaining closed on Sundays as a reflection of the founder's personal commitment to his faith, Apple Green did take this factor into consideration when developing their tenant plan. As a result, the controversial chain was included in their lineup, despite the potential conflict with the thruway's guidelines.

While Chick-fil-A has not yet commented on the proposed legislation, its passing would impact not only the fast-food chain but also all food establishments under the jurisdiction of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. The lawmakers involved in the bill have not disclosed when the proposal will be officially reviewed or discussed.

It remains to be seen how this legislation will progress and what impact it may have on Chick-fil-A's operations in New York State. As the bill unfolds, it will undoubtedly ignite a broader conversation about religious beliefs, personal principles, and the role of businesses in accommodating societal norms.
