The city joins a prestigious list that includes Medellín, Cape Town, Lisbon, Bali, Mexico City, Tokyo and Berlin, underscoring the success of Chiang Mai's development strategy centred on intellectual capital and creativity.
According to Forbes, digital nomads are increasingly evolving into "digital entrepreneurs", placing greater emphasis on destinations that offer strong business ecosystems, networking opportunities and income-generation potential, rather than simply affordable living costs and favourable weather.
Chiang Mai stands out for its modern co-working spaces, vibrant café culture and comprehensive infrastructure, making location-independent business operations both efficient and accessible.
The ranking aligns closely with Chiang Mai's vision as a Meetings, Incentives, Conferences and Exhibitions (Mice) city, where creative capital serves as a key driver of urban development. Strategically, the Mice industry is expected to play a pivotal role in attracting and supporting high-potential professionals through three approaches.
They are strengthening Chiang Mai's position as a hub for international conferences and business networking in technology and creative industries; promoting a festival economy that combines Lanna cultural heritage, soft power and craftsmanship with digital innovation; and developing the city into a global association hub which can attract professional and international organisations.
Observers say the recognition from Forbes marks another milestone for Chiang Mai, reinforcing its status as a dynamic city and supporting preparations to host the MICE City Summit 2027 next year.
