Chhattisgarh: One dies in furnace blast at Bhilai steel plant

RAIPUR: A contractual worker died and one sustained severe burns after a blast in a furnace during the repair at Bhilai Steel Plant in Durg district of Chhattisgarh on Wednesday. The management on Thursday suspended its DGM (mechanical) and ordered an inquiry in the case.The workers’ union and kin of the deceased staged a demonstration on Thursday demanding appropriate compensation and compassionate appointment, and denied taking the deceased’s body until their demands were met.

Later, the BSP management ensured to agree to their demands. The two workers had sustained severe burns while repairing an old and non-functional furnace-7 when it blew. The condition of both the workers was critical and they were admitted to hospital. One of them, identified as Rahul Upadhyay, succumbed to his injuries late night. Another labourer Parmeshwar Sikka, 26, has sustained 90 per cent burns and is under treatment.

The family of the deceased and workers’ union staged a protest outside the Sector 9 hospital.Officials said that the BSP has ensured of giving increased remuneration on a compassionate appointment to the kin of the deceased.
