Chess champion reports opponent for having her phone moments after they took a selfie

  • World No 1 chess player Magnus Carlsen reported his 18-year-old opponent, Alua Nurman, after she took a pre-match selfie with him.
  • The incident occurred at the Grenke Chess Festival in Germany, where Nurman used her phone to take a picture with the five-time world champion.
  • Carlsen informed an official that Nurman had a phone, which is prohibited during official matches due to concerns about cheating.
  • Nurman's phone was confiscated, though there was no suggestion she intended to cheat, and Carlsen was praised by some fans for potentially preventing her later disqualification.
  • Carlsen went on to win the match, while Nurman finished second in the women's category, and she later told ChessBase India that she was inspired by another grandmaster's previous selfie with Carlsen.
