Chelsea youngster Ian Maatsen completes season-long loan move to Burnley

Chelsea defender Ian Maatsen has completed a season-long loan to Burnley to work under new Clarets boss Vincent Kompany. The 20-year-old heads to Turf Moor to undertake a second year of Championship football.

The left-back had participated in Chelsea's first team training when pre-season started on July 2nd but was left of the squad that travelled to the USA. His competition, in the form of Marcos Alonso, Emerson Palmieri, Ben Chilwell and Kenedy, all travelled to Los Angeles.

Maatsen had earlier rejected interest from Feyenoord and opted to work through pre-season with the Blues. If he had no role at Chelsea, looking at options in England to continue his development was part of his decision.

The Dutch under-21 international has a contract with the Blues until 2024, and it is believed there is no option to make the loan to Burnley permanent. The wing-back heads into his third season of senior football and third temporary move away from the Blues.

Maatsen enjoyed a successful loan at Coventry City in 2021/22 alongside former academy product Jake Clarke-Salter. The youngster featured 42 times for the Sky Blues and recorded three goals and assists as he played all along the left flank. The defender managed to replicate what he had done in League One in the previous season, where he notched up 41 appearances for Charlton Athletic and recorded three goals and two assists.

Following the move Maatsen said: “I’m excited to come here and play for Burnley. It’s a big club and a new challenge which I’m ready for. It’s a different town, but a new challenge. I look forward to meeting new people and this season will be good for me.”

New Burnely manager Vincent Kompany spoke after the announcement about Ian Maatsen by saying: “We’re pleased to add Ian to our team, he’s a talented, energetic & pacy player, who can defend & attack.” “Ian will certainly be a great addition to our team on & off the pitch.”
