Chelsea youngster Conor Gallagher completes Swansea City loan

Conor Gallagher has completed a loan move to Swansea City.

The 19-year old Chelsea midfielder is the third signing to arrive at the Liberty Stadium in this window, following the captures of Blues team-mate Marc Guehi and Liverpool striker Rhian Brewster.

All three youngsters were part of Steve Cooper's England side that marched to glory at the under-17s World Cup in 2017, with the presence of the Swans boss believed to be a big part in the players' decision to move to SA1.

Gallagher will stay at the club until the end of the season, and his signing has already excited members of the Jack Army, following a series of sparkling performances for Championship rivals Charlton.

The teenager was only recalled from the Valley by parent club Chelsea Tuesday, a decision that shocked Addicks boss Lee Bowyer.

“I didn’t see this coming if I’m honest which makes it harder to take. At the end of the day, though, we have to move on.

“He’s been a credit and a pleasure to work with. He’s come in and put his body on the line every single day. He’s scored us goals and helped us win games. For someone so young, he’s a great talent to work with and I wish him all the best for his future."

Despite the player's obvious talents, there are already questions over what sort of role Gallagher will play at the Liberty Stadium.

His arrival takes the overall number of loanees in Cooper's squad to six, one over the limit for a matchday squad.

Gallagher, a current England under-21s international was named as an unused substitute in the 2019 Europa League final, having first signed on with Chelsea at the age of eight.

The midfielder was also named as the club's Academy Player of the Year for the 2018–19 season, an accolade that earned him a new three-year deal at Stamford Bridge.

Speaking about the move, Gallagher said: “I’m very excited to join a big club like Swansea City,” he said.

“I’m looking forward to hitting the ground running and making a contribution to the team.

“I have gained a lot of experience from my time with Charlton, I have played almost every minute in the Championship.

“My whole time there was great, and this is a new challenge to get excited about.

“I think there is a bit of expectation because I have scored a few goals, and I like that bit of pressure and I am looking forward to showing what I can do.

“I am a box-to-box midfielder, I am hard-working, I like to think I am good technically and able to score and assist, but defend too.”

Gallagher will wear the number 33 shirt.
