Chelsea v Liverpool live: Estevao’s dramatic winner leaves Premier League champions facing ‘mini crisis’

Estevao celebrates Chelsea's win after his 95th minute winner - (Action Images via Reuters)

Chelsea’s 18-year-old forward Estevao stunned Premier League champions Liverpool with a 95th minute winner to hand the Reds their third defeat in a row under Arne Slot.

Moises Caicedo’s rocket of a shot from outside the box gave Chelsea a first-half lead at Stamford Bridge and Liverpool survived a penalty scare before the break when Alejandro Garnacho went down cheaply under the challenge of Dominik Szoboszlai.

Liverpool struggled to click in attack, with Mohamed Salah wasting a golden chance after the restart, but Cody Gakpo scrambled in an equaliser from close range following Alexander Isak’s touch in the box.

Despite Chelsea losing both starting centre-backs to injuries, Enzo Maresca’s side were able to find a dramatic winner. Estevao arrived at the back post to send Stamford Bridge into delirium.

Maresca was sent off for his celebrations, as Chelsea bounced back from consecutive defeats, and it leaves Arsenal top of the Premier League table after their 2-0 win over West Ham earlier.

Liverpool head into the international break in a “mini crisis”, according to former midfielder Jamie Redknapp, with the Reds hosting Manchester United in their first game back following their worst run of results under Slot.

“Everyone is just a bit off it. Confidence looks low,” Redknapp said on Sky Sports. “I wouldn't write Liverpool off just yet but this is a mini crisis because of the way they are playing."

Chelsea FC 2 - 1 Liverpool FC

This Liverpool team doesn’t make sense and latest defeat points to something bigger

21:07 , Miguel Delaney

Just when the stage seemed set for a launch moment from Liverpool’s new stars, Chelsea’s great hope provided one. Just when the Premier League champions looked like they could snatch another stoppage-time winner, Estevao gave Chelsea what their late siege deserved. Liverpool got what was coming. This was of course the second time in a week that they have lost 2-1 to a late goal, to make it a third successive defeat.

Liverpool are now very much in a classic Premier League crisis. Chelsea are out of one, as Enzo Maresca almost symbolised with that Jose Mourinho-style run down the touchline to celebrate the winner.

Are Liverpool facing a 'mini-crisis' after third defeat in a row?

20:47 , Jamie Braidwood

Former Liverpool midfielder Jamie Redknapp believes Liverpool are heading into the international break facing a “mini-crisis” after a third defeat in a row.

He told Sky Sports: "The full-backs aren't working. If you said to me that Dominik Szoboszlai would be playing at right-back I would say 'why? He's one of the best No 8s in the world'.

"But you're trying to get everyone in the team and keep everyone happy. Everyone is just a bit off it. Confidence looks low. I wouldn't write Liverpool off just yet but this is a mini crisis because of the way they are playing."

Arne Slot issues Ibrahima Konate injury update as centre-back limps off Liverpool defeat

20:34 , Jamie Braidwood

Arne Slot has confirmed that Ibrahima Konate felt something in his “quad” as Liverpool face a potential injury crisis at centre-back following defeat to Chelsea.

The France international limped off early in the second half of the 2-1 defeat at Stamford Bridge, with Ryan Gravenberch dropping into defence from holding midfield.

Slot said that he would have made that change anyway as Liverpool chased an equaliser at Chelsea, but the head coach revealed he was forced to make it earlier than planned.

Konate’s injury will ring alarm bells after Liverpool missed out on the deadline-day signing Crystal Palace’s Marc Guehi and went into the season with Virgil van Dijk, Konate and Joe Gomez as established options in defence.

Liverpool head coach Arne Slot: 'These are the margins'

20:30 , Jamie Braidwood

Liverpool scored last goals to win five matches in a row at the start of the season. They have now lost two games late on, with Arne Slot reflecting on the “margins” that are now not falling Liverpool’s way.

"We were the dominant team but in the last 10-15 mins it was end to end, both teams could have scored. Both teams arrived a lot of times at the 18-yard line,” Slot said.

“These are the margins that don't fall for us at the moment. we have to work harder to not rely on these margins. as I said, Chelsea, Palace away, these are also teams that ask you a lot of questions."

Arne Slot unhappy with Liverpool penalty decision

20:15 , Jamie Braidwood

Arne Slot said there are “different standards” in the Premier League following a penalty appeal on Alexander Isak.

The Reds lost 1-0 to Galatasaray in midweek after conceding a penalty and it sounds like Slot believes his team should have had one.

"This week in the Champions League that was a penalty. Different standards in the Premier League."

The Liverpool boss adds: "Another disappointing loss that's clear. Similar to the Palace game, although a little different. In the first half, we didn't play our best football but we created three big chances; they created one.

"In the second half, we created more than enough to score more than one. In the last 10, it was end-to-end. Both teams could have won it. We didn't, Chelsea did."

Enzo Maresca sent off for celebrating Chelsea’s last-gasp win over Liverpool

19:59 , Jamie Braidwood

Enzo Maresca was sent off for celebrating Chelsea’s dramatic win over Liverpool as the Italian had his Jose Mourinho moment at Stamford Bridge.

Maresca was shown a second yellow card after he sprinted the length of the touchline to join in with the celebrations after Estevao scored in the 95th minute against the Premier League champions.

Chelsea had lost their previous two matches in the Premier League, with Maresca facing some pressure ahead of the arrival of Liverpool, but his players battled through an injury crisis to claim a memorable result.

Chelsea win a classic in front of Madonna

19:45 , Jamie Braidwood

Estevao Willian struck his first Chelsea goal in the fifth minute of stoppage time as Chelsea stunned Liverpool with a memorable 2-1 win at Stamford Bridge.

After consecutive Premier League defeats this was a Chelsea display marked by guts and fresh ideas, and it ended spectacularly. Marc Cucurella got in down the left channel and crossed low to the far post where the 18-year-old Brazil international slid in to beat Andy Robertson to the ball and squeeze it home amidst uproarious scenes.

They had run Liverpool all over the pitch in the first half, taking the lead through a sublime long-range strike from Moises Caicedo.

Later on, after Cody Gakpo had pounced on Alexander Isak's lovely controlled flick-on to equalise, they battled to close off avenues of attack as the champions found their confidence and their rhythm.

Having weathered the storm, the game ended with a goal that will be remembered for years - including by Madonna who watched from the stands - and the sight of Enzo Maresca sprinting down the touchline to join his players in celebration.

Chelsea's new star?

FULL TIME! Chelsea 2-1 Liverpool

19:34 , Jamie Braidwood

And where does this leave Liverpool? A third defeat in all competitions, and a second defeat in a row to a last-minute winner in the Premier League.

This is now their worst run under Arne Slot. They are not clicking in attack and are leaking goals in defence.

They host Manchester United after the international break. Oooft. That’s a huge one now.

Chelsea 2-1 Liverpool

19:26 , Jamie Braidwood

90+7 mins: We were all waiting for a launch moment from one of Liverpool's stars but have we just seen one from Estevao? He's been excellent since coming on, and has now scored what might well be a 95th-minute winner. Chelsea deserve it for the way they changed the game, and that late period of pressure.

Chelsea 1-1 Liverpool

19:22 , Miguel Delaney

90+2 mins: Chelsea have been very good the last 10 but, perhaps, not good enough. Enzo Fernandez really should have scored the winner there, only for his header to hit the post from so close. It was a brilliant cross from Estevao, amid a sustained period of pressure.

Curtis Jones then shoots over from the angle.

Chelsea 1-1 Liverpool

19:20 , Jamie Braidwood

90+1 mins: CHANCE! OOOOH that could have been it! Estavao finds a stunning cross to the back post. Enzo Fernandez arrives but heads against the outside of the upright!

Maresca has his head in his hands.

Chelsea 1-1 Liverpool

19:19 , Jamie Braidwood

90 mins: SEVEN minutes of added time.

Plenty of time for both teams to nick a winner.

Chelsea 1-1 Liverpool

19:18 , Jamie Braidwood

89 mins: Salah leads the Liverpool break and this time chooses to try and set up a team-mate. He finds Szoboszlai but he drags his shot wide. It was close but Sanchez had it covered.

Chelsea 1-1 Liverpool

19:17 , Jamie Braidwood

88 mins: Excellent defending and recovery from Szoboszlai, who tracks the run of Gittens and cuts it out as the forward looked to be in on goal.

Caicedo tries his luck again from the edge of the box and Mamardashvili has to help it over the crossbar.

Chelsea 1-1 Liverpool

19:13 , Jamie Braidwood

85 mins: Both of these teams conceded late goals last weekend. Will we get another late moment? It feels on a knife-edge.

Chelsea 1-1 Liverpool

19:12 , Jamie Braidwood

84 mins: DOUBLE SAVE! Giorgi Mamardashvili is suddenly called into action! Gittens and then Estavao force the goalkeeper into diving stops with curling shots towards the far post. He read them well.

Chelsea 1-1 Liverpool

19:10 , Jamie Braidwood

81 mins: The pressure is building from Liverpool, with Gakpo leading the charge down the left. Wirtz’s touch is suddenly heavy in the box.

Chelsea 1-1 Liverpool

19:08 , Jamie Braidwood

79 mins: Oh that is CLOSE! Enzo Fernandez puts a cross across the face of goal and Gravenberch’s touch takes it just wide. That really could have snuck in.

Chelsea 1-1 Liverpool

19:07 , Jamie Braidwood

77 mins: Chelsea still look dangerous in attack and that may now be their best form of defence.

Szoboszlai crunches into a challenge on Cucurella and is booked. That was a 50-50 and Szoboszlai wasn’t near it.

Chelsea 1-1 Liverpool

19:02 , Jamie Braidwood

74 mins: A last roll of the dice for Liverpool. Isak is replaced by Ekitike, who is fit after taking a knock in midweek, and has cut off his lovely curls.

Jamie Gittens replaces Garnacho and Estevao comes on for Neto. So Chelsea have fresh legs out wide. Marc Guiu is also on for Pedro.

Chelsea 1-1 Liverpool

19:01 , Jamie Braidwood

72 mins: There are penalty shouts all over the place now. Another one as Isak goes around James looking to win the ball and is dragged down, but Isak had also dragged James down. They were both at it.

(REUTERS)

Chelsea 1-1 Liverpool

18:59 , Jamie Braidwood

70 mins: Neto went down in the box off the ball and with just Mac Allister next to him. VAR checked it and there was nothing in it.

Mac Allister then has a shot blocked, with Chelsea dropping deeper and deeper.

Chelsea 1-1 Liverpool

18:56 , Jamie Braidwood

67 mins: Oh man, Chelsea’s injury crisis goes from bad to worse as Josh Acheampong limps off. That’s both of Chelsea’s starting centre-backs gone, and now six centre-backs in total.

Jorrel Hato is on for Chelsea: that’s a back four of Gusto, James, Hato and Cucurella.

Chelsea 1-1 Liverpool

18:54 , Jamie Braidwood

65 mins: What an ending we have for us now. Robertson has to be sharp to clear Garnacho’s cross. Then Liverpool spring forward through Salah, as Wirtz finds the pass. Salah shoots over! But he is relieved to see the flag is up.

GOAL! Chelsea 1-1 Liverpool (GAKPO 63')

18:51 , Jamie Braidwood

GAKPO SCRAMBLES IT IN AND LIVERPOOL ARE LEVEL!

This is either stunning from Isak or very lucky. A ball into the box falls to the striker as he flicks it around a Chelsea defender to set up Gakpo, who is three yards out. Gakpo slams the ball into the top corner and Liverpool have life!

Chelsea 1-0 Liverpool

18:47 , Jamie Braidwood

59 mins: A swift, flowing move from Chelsea as they again release Garnacho. Neto heads over at the back post from Cucurella’s cross, but Robertson got a touch. Corner.

Chelsea 1-0 Liverpool

18:46 , Miguel Delaney

58 mins: As Konate came off there, he was pointing to his leg, suggesting it's an injury.

Garnacho then has space on the left, as the game opens up. He squares the ball across but Van Dijk guides it through.

Chelsea 1-0 Liverpool

18:45 , Jamie Braidwood

55 mins: We’ve got about 40 minutes of action to go: Liverpool are already going all out, Chelsea are patched-up at the back.

Should be good.

Chelsea 1-0 Liverpool

18:43 , Jamie Braidwood

55 mins: Changes. Lavia replaces Badiashile and Reece James goes to centre-back, next to Josh Acheampong.

Liverpool swap Robertsonn for Kerkez and Jones for Konate... .so Gravenberch goes to centre-back.

Chelsea 1-0 Liverpool

18:42 , Jamie Braidwood

52 mins: Another moment for Salah, but this is a miss too! Salah skips past Badiashile and suddenly it’s 4v4 for Liverpool, but Salah chooses to shoot and lifts his effort high and wide.

There’s a concern for Chelsea as Badiashile is down after that run. They are already down to the bones at centre-back.

Chelsea 1-0 Liverpool

18:40 , Jamie Braidwood

50 mins: Liverpool have started the second half on top. Gravenberch shoots low but can’t match Caicedo as Sanchez saves.

Pedro, who has been quiet, springs forward but his shot is blocked by Van Dijk. The ball bounces off Isak.

Chelsea 1-0 Liverpool

18:38 , Miguel Delaney

48 mins: That could have been Wirtz's launch moment. On as a sub, his first contribution was that divinely inventive flick to put Salah through. The Egyptian, alas, could only hit it wide. Should have been 1-1.

It's the second time a Liverpool attacker has done something special only for his teammate to badly squander the chance. Salah's ball for Isak in the first half was superb. You could say these are signs of it coming together, and how far off it they still are.

Chelsea 1-0 Liverpool

18:36 , Jamie Braidwood

47 mins: The introduction of Wirtz means we now have the four most expensive Premier League players of all time on the pitch: Isak, Wirtz, Caicedo and Fernandez.

All four are £100m+.

Chelsea 1-0 Liverpool

18:34 , Jamie Braidwood

46 mins; CHANCE! Oh my word this could have been it for Wirtz! A stunning pirouette on the edge of the box sets up Salah, who drags his shot wide!

Wirtz holds his head in his hands. Salah knew he should have scored that.

KICK-OFF! Chelsea 1-0 Liverpool

18:33 , Jamie Braidwood

46 mins: Could this be Wirtz’s moment? Could inspiring a comeback at Stamford Bridge be the real start to his Liverpool career?

Bradley is off, protected from a red card, in what is becoming a bit of a theme. Szoboszlai goes to right back and will face Garnacho, who he tangled with in the first half.

Chelsea 1-0 Liverpool

18:31 , Jamie Braidwood

Florian Wirtz looks like he will be coming on for Liverpool.

Perhaps for Conor Bradley? The right back is booked and Szoboszlai could go to right back.

Chelsea 1-0 Liverpool: Was this a penalty?

18:24 , Jamie Braidwood

Enzo Maresca was so furious that Szoboszlai’s challenge on Garnacho wasn’t given as a penalty that he was booked for his protests.

Garnacho certainly made the most of it.

HALF TIME! Chelsea 1-0 Liverpool

18:18 , Jamie Braidwood

Caicedo’s rocket is the difference at the break, with Liverpool trailing at half time for the third match in a row. Work to do for Arne Slot.

Chelsea 1-0 Liverpool

18:16 , Jamie Braidwood

45 mins: Bradley, on a yellow, is on a bit of a tightrope facing Garnacho and the winger goes down after a nibble from the right back.

A free-kick to Chelsea out wide as we enter two minutes of stoppage time.

Chelsea 1-0 Liverpool

18:14 , Jamie Braidwood

43 mins: CLOSE! Now that’s what we expect from Liverpool. Salah sets up a chance for Isak with a delicious cross with the outside of his boot. Isak is in front of goal but heads it over! He couldn’t get over it.

Chelsea 1-0 Liverpool

18:13 , Jamie Braidwood

42 mins; Another sloppy moment from Liverpool as Gravenberch’s touch in midfield is loose.

Chelsea 1-0 Liverpool

18:10 , Jamie Braidwood

39 mins: PENALTY?! Garnacho gets on the better side of Szoboszlai and goes down in the box. Anthony Taylor had a good view and waves it away.

Chelsea are furious and Enzo Maresca is booked! Maresca is livid and is arguing with someone on the Liverpool bench.

Chelsea 1-0 Liverpool

18:09 , Jamie Braidwood

38 mins: CLOSE! It almost leads to a second for Chelsea! The ball is rolled back to Garnacho and he places his shot for towards the corner.

Mamardashvili is beaten but it curls just wide!

Chelsea 1-0 Liverpool

18:08 , Jamie Braidwood

37 mins: Great run from Neto, winning his challenge with Kerkez and then zooming around the outside of Van Djik. Konate clears for a corner at the front post.

Chelsea 1-0 Liverpool

18:06 , Miguel Delaney

35 mins: Chelsea have been competent, and fairly composed, which is a basic contrast with Liverpool so far. It's hard to remember a performance from the champions when so many players were so individually sloppy. There have been basic bad passes from Isak, Salah, Kerkez and even Gravenberch.

(REUTERS)

Chelsea 1-0 Liverpool

33 mins: Chance for Liverpool and their best moment since falling behind. Kerkez makes an overlapping run but can’t find Salah with the cut-back!

Bradley is then booked for pulling back on Cucurella.

Chelsea 1-0 Liverpool

18:01 , Jamie Braidwood

29 mins: Caicedo is late into the challenge on Szoboszlai and leaves the midfielder with a sore one. Kerkez passes the ball straight out as he looked for Gakpo, adding to Liverpool’s frustration.

Chelsea 1-0 Liverpool

17:57 , Jamie Braidwood

26 mins: Mamardashvili claims a cross and looks to spring Salah - but he can’t surge away and is instead forced back the other way.

Salah then goes to ground as he tries to hold off Badiashile. A moment later, he is stopped by Badiashile as he tried to dribble into the box.

A frustrating couple of minutes for Salah.

(AP)

Chelsea 1-0 Liverpool

17:54 , Jamie Braidwood

24 mins: Liverpool have not responded to falling behind and continue to look disjointed, with loose passes and heavy touches.

They had made a decent start but Caicedo’s stunning strike has rocked them.

Chelsea 1-0 Liverpool

17:53 , Miguel Delaney

18 mins: A sensational strike from Caicedo to blow this game open. The way in which it seemed to pick up speed as it shot right into the top corner was in some contrast to the way Liverpool just seemed appeared to open this triangle of space for Caicedo. If it's difficult to hit a ball that well, the set-up can't have been easier. Caicedo was allowed just slip away from Mac Allister before even getting the opportunity to take an extra touch.

Liverpool's defensive issues continue.

GOAL! Chelsea 1-0 Liverpool (CAICEDO 14')

17:44 , Jamie Braidwood

WHAT A STRIKE FROM CAICEDO! UNSTOPPABLE!

What a stunning goal. The midfielder points to the Chelsea badge - in reference to the fact that Liverpool tried to sign him two years ago! After Liverpool gave it cheaply, Caicedo unleashes a stunning strike into the top corner, beating Mamardashvili, who had no chance.

13 mins: Mamardashvili gives Van Dijk a horrible pass that the Liverpool captain can’t control on his chest...

Chelsea 0-0 Liverpool

17:42 , Jamie Braidwood

12 mins: Again, Isak and Salah aren’t quick clicking as Liverpool win the ball back and Salah looks for the striker. Badiashile, making just his second Premier League start of 2025, guides it out for a goal-kick.

Chelsea 0-0 Liverpool

17:40 , Jamie Braidwood

9 mins: Mamardashvili does well to collect Fernandez’s cross, that was swinging towards the back post. Liverpool look to play quickly towards Isak but it doesn’t stick.

Chelsea 0-0 Liverpool

17:39 , Jamie Braidwood

8 mins: Sanchez was not convincing as he flapped at the punch. There was a foul in there, anyway.

Chelsea get an opportunity to break as a ball goes over to Garnacho. Mamardashvili is quick off his line to clear.

Chelsea 0-0 Liverpool

17:38 , Jamie Braidwood

8 mins: There’s a better balance to Liverpool’s midfield as they play through Chelsea. Isak and Salah aren’t quite on the same page but Liverpool win a corner on the left, which Gakpo will take.

Chelsea 0-0 Liverpool

17:36 , Jamie Braidwood

6 mins: Isak drifts out to the left but his ball back to Szoboszlai, who has returned to midfield, is cut out on the edge of the box.

Chelsea 0-0 Liverpool

17:35 , Jamie Braidwood

4 mins: Liverpool are looking to avoid another slow start after defeats at Galatasaray and Crystal Palace. Isak’s ball towards Mac Allister runs long, but the Reds do look bright early on.

Chelsea 0-0 Liverpool

17:33 , Jamie Braidwood

3 mins: Isak plays a clever ball to Gakpo and the Dutchman looks to be in space. But he takes a heavy touch and Acheampong gets across to stop the threat.

Chelsea 0-0 Liverpool

17:32 , Jamie Braidwood

1 mins: Mamardashvili is put under pressure on his first touch but does well to play out to Conor Bradley. There were a few jeers from the Chelsea fans to put some pressure on the stand-in goalkeeper.

KICK-OFF! Chelsea 0-0 Liverpool

Liverpool head coach Arne Slot on decision to drop Florian Wirtz

17:27 , Jamie Braidwood

Liverpool head coach Arne Slot says it natural for big teams to make changes and leave out big names during a busy run of games.

Asked about the decision to drop Florian Wirtz, he tells Sky Sports:

"We play a lot of games. If you play a lot of games, you usually change one or two players. We try to pick the players based on the games. You can't compare the playing style of Palace to the style of Chelsea."

Chelsea's Enzo Maresca on injury crisis and team line-up

17:22 , Jamie Braidwood

Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca says he is not concerned by the injury “crisis” facing his team, as Josh Acheampong and Benoit Badiashile form part of a patched-up defence.

"It's nice. You get to learn how to manage these kind of moments and it's good to learn,” Maresca tells Sky Sports.

"We have nine players out - two or three players are still carrying small problems. But they're doing fantastically to be there on the pitch.

"Let's hope today can be a good day for Chelsea, for everyone."

Chelsea are looking to avoid three consecutive Premier League defeats for the first time since May 2023 - with the Blues having lost four of their last five Premier League matches against the reigning champions.

London woes for Liverpool

Liverpool 3-1 lost at Stamford Bridge last season in one of their four games as Premier League champions. After a 2-1 defeat at Crystal Palace last weekend, the Reds have lost their last three games in London, for the first time since between October 2009 and November 2010, and have not lost back-to-back Premier League games since April 2023.

Why Liverpool are struggling — and the three solutions to Arne Slot’s headache

16:35 , Richard Jolly

Even as he closed in on the Premier League title that rendered his first season at Liverpool a spectacular success, Arne Slot realised it was getting harder for him. His side were finding it harder to cut opponents open. It was a recognition that underpinned Liverpool’s summer spending. If some of their £450m outlay was spent on a quest for another dimension, Liverpool have instead suffered back-to-back defeats for only the second time in his reign.

Slot nevertheless sees the start of the new campaign as a continuation of the second half of last. He saw Galatasaray’s celebrations when they beat Liverpool on Tuesday, as though it were their Champions League final. He inferred that part of his stellar start at Anfield came from opponents underestimating him, figuring that Liverpool were more beatable without the charismatic presence of Jurgen Klopp.

This match will come too soon for Cole Palmer and Tosin Adarabioyo, who will likely be out until after the international break. However, Andrey Santos and Wesley Fofana could return to the squad after short-term injury lay-offs.

Arne Slot seeking new ways to stop opposition as Liverpool aim to bounce back

Liverpool head coach Arne Slot believes he benefited from the aura of Jurgen Klopp in his first season, but knows the situation has changed now they are the defending Premier League champions.

Slot thinks opponents felt they could capitalise on his first season, coming from the Eredivisie to manage in England for the first time and succeeding the highly regarded German, and were keen to exploit a perceived weakness.

Enzo Maresca empathises with Liverpool’s grieving of Diogo Jota: ‘I went through the same’

15:30 , Jamie Braidwood

Enzo Maresca has drawn on his personal trauma surrounding footballing tragedy to empathise with Liverpool’s players as they continue to grieve the loss of Diogo Jota.

The forward died in July at the age of 28 following a car accident, just weeks after he had helped the team to the Premier League title.

Arne Slot's side lead the way this season after six matches and the Chelsea head coach - who suffered a similar tragedy in 2007 when Sevilla team-mate Antonio Puerta died suddenly - believes the Reds' performances have been the more remarkable for what they are going through.

Jamie Carragher calls Liverpool a ‘mess’ and demands star player is dropped

15:15 , Jamie Braidwood

Jamie Carragher said Liverpool are a “mess” and called on head coach Arne Slot to “earn his money” by fixing the issues in the team after suffering back-to-back defeats.

The Premier League champions required late goals to win their first five games of the season but after a summer of heavy spending Carragher said Liverpool have lost their balance and called on big-money signing Florian Wirtz to be dropped.

“I’m not watching a top team,” Carragher said on CBS Sports. “Liverpool aren’t playing football at the moment, they are playing basketball. It is just end-to-end and I don’t think top teams play like that.”

Enzo Maresca says Estevao Willian reminds him of Cole Palmer

15:00 , Jamie Braidwood

Chelsea are still without Cole Palmer, who Enzo Maresca hopes will be back after the international break,

But exciting 18-year-old winger Estevao Willian could step in.

The Brazil international has been used sparingly since arriving in the summer whilst he acclimatises to English football.

"Estevao reminds me of Cole when he was with me for the Under-23s at (Manchester) City," said Maresca.

"I think Cole's path has been similar to Estevao's in terms of starting as a winger and then slowly you can move inside.

"The Premier League is completely different. If you want to play in the middle you need to be prepared physically. Cole now is like that, and I see Estevao exactly the same way."

Curtis Jones calls for Liverpool to ‘stay calm’ in wake of back-to-back defeats

14:45 , Jamie Braidwood

Curtis Jones says Liverpool have to keep calm and carry on as Arne Slot’s side look to recover from back-to-back defeats in today’s “huge game” at Chelsea.

“It’s just part of the game,” Jones said. “I say it all the time, you must be mad if you think you can win every game.

“You’d obviously like to, but the reality is these teams you play are world-class teams and it’s normal if you lose. It’s just how you bounce back.

“We’ve got a huge game again in three days, the lads have to stay calm.

“It’s part of it, it’s not fine that we lose but we just have to stay calm and it will all change. It will all change, of course it will.”

Chelsea's red card problem adds to frustrating start to season

14:30 , Jamie Braidwood

Red cards have plagued Chelsea this season, with goalkeeper Robert Sanchez dismissed five minutes into the 2-1 defeat at Manchester United and Trevoh Chalobah being sent off in last weekend's 3-1 loss to visiting Brighton and Hove Albion.

Maresca said: "Most of the games we didn't get the points were because of the red cards. Also the injury situation, we have eight players out. It's a mixed combination but we don't have any doubt that slowly we will be again where we need to be.”

Galatasaray defeat proves Liverpool’s troubles run deeper than we knew

14:15 , Richard Jolly

Virgil van Dijk has built a career and a reputation on not panicking. The most laidback centre-back of his generation can derive some of his considerable authority from a calm demeanour. It would be out of character if his reaction to back-to-back defeats were to panic. It wasn’t. “There shouldn’t be panic, but improvement is needed,” counselled the Liverpool skipper.

A 1-0 loss to Galatasaray followed a 2-1 setback at Crystal Palace. With Chelsea next, there is the potential for the week to get worse, for Liverpool to enter territory they have not previously charted under Arne Slot by losing three in a row.

Liverpool are vulnerable but still dangerous, warns Chelsea boss Maresca

14:00 , Jamie Braidwood

Liverpool's back-to-back defeats over the last week have shown that they are vulnerable, but that will not make tonight’s Premier League clash with the champions any easier for Chelsea, warned Enzo Maresca

"There is a vulnerability about any team in the world, not just Liverpool,” Maresca said. “But if a team wins every game, it is impossible to catch them. Now they lost one or two games. That shows vulnerability.

"I don't think now it is better to play Liverpool. It is always a tough game, always a big team."
