Chelsea told they made mistake in not signing Harry Maguire after Wesley Fofana transfer

Chelsea have been told by Sky Sports pundit Paul Merson that they could be making a mistake in not signing Harry Maguire after choosing to acquire Wesley Fofana from Leicester City instead.

The Blues had reportedly been interested in Manchester United captain Maguire after failing to sign long-term target Jules Kounde, who instead joined Barcelona.

However, Chelsea would choose to then go after Fofana, and now look to have got their man, as football.london understands Chelsea returned with a fourth bid worth a guaranteed £70million and further add-ons that would take the transfer above the £80million that Manchester United paid for Harry Maguire in 2019.

But Merson is unsure of the signing of the Frenchman, and has insinuated that they have made a mistake.

Merson added: “If I was Chelsea, I would have gone for Harry Maguire, I would! Harry Maguire in a three is very good, believe me. He’s played for England and never gets ripped, he’s a good defender in a three.

"Chelsea have to play a three, he would have suited that. He’s an English player as well, sometimes they like English players.”

With Fofana set to sign, Chelsea will now feel confident in their centre-back department, following the arrival of Kalidou Koulibaly alongside Fofana, Thiago Silva and Trevor Chalobah.
