Chelsea team vs Arsenal confirmed: Reece James and Ben Chilwell start, Mateo Kovacic returns

Frank Lampard has made two changes to the Chelsea team that faces Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium this evening, with Reece James returning at right back and Mateo Kovacic coming into midfield.

Ben Chilwell is also fit enough to start having come off in the 3-0 win against West Ham after turning his right ankle.

Cesar Azpilicueta and Jorginho drop out of the side, while Tammy Abraham continues up front.

The head coach said that it would be impossible to name the same team today and against Aston Villa on Monday, meaning that there will be wholesale changes at Stamford Bridge in 48 hours.

Speaking before this evening's game he was very unhappy with the scheduling, which gives title rivals Liverpool, Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur an additional day of rest between fixtures.

Asked if he could play most players who face Arsenal against Villa, Lampard said: "I don’t think so, I think that’s pretty much impossible. I couldn’t say what I just said and then bang out the same team and expect to get a high energy and high level performance out of them, necessarily fitness-wise.

"The second day after a game, when we will be playing, is a second day recovery because it’s not good for the players to go and even train at medium to high level, let alone go and play 90 minutes."

Chelsea: Edouard Mendy; Reece James, Thiago Silva, Kurt Zouma, Ben Chilwell; Mateo Kovacic, N'Golo Kante, Mason Mount; Christian Pulisic, Tammy Abraham, Timo Werner.

Subs: Kepa Arrizabalaga, Cesar Azpilicueta, Toni Rudiger, Emerson Palmieri, Jorginho, Billy Gilmour, Kai Havertz, Callum Hudson-Odoi, Olivier Giroud.
