Chelsea plot friendly match this week as Graham Potter’s non-World Cup stars make training return

Chelsea will return to training on Tuesday following a break at the start of the World Cup.

Graham Potter’s players not involved in Qatar will gather at their Cobham training base for five days before they travel to Abu Dhabi on Sunday for some warm-weather work.

Chelsea are also discussing the prospect of a behind-closed-doors friendly this week. The Blues will face Aston Villa in Abu Dhabi on December 11 as they step up preparations for their Premier League return against Bournemouth on December 27.

Players not at the World Cup, including Jorginho, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Armando Broja, will form the squad returning to training on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, Reece James, Ben Chilwell and Wesley Fofana are stepping up their respective injury recoveries and hope to be fit to face Bournemouth.

N’Golo Kante is a longer-term absentee and will continue working in the gym. It is unclear how much progress Kepa Arrizabalaga has made in his recovery from an ongoing foot injury which has proven difficult to shake off.

Potter will boost his squad with several youth players, with Lewis Hall and Omari Hutchinson among those who could make the trip to Abu Dhabi to fill in for players at the World Cup.
