Chelsea news: Enzo Fernandez advantage secured as Everton bid £45m for Conor Gallagher

Your morning Chelsea digest on Tuesday, January 31.

£46m mistake overturned

In the summer of 2012 Chelsea were one of several sides keen to secure red hot Atletico Madrid forward Radamel Falcao. The Columbian was one of the most in form attackers in the world at the time.

Ironically Chelsea faced Atletico in the UEFA Super Cup final on deadline day amid their interest in Falcao but the striker wasn't to be playing in blue. Instead, Falcao crashed in a first half hat-trick to remind his opposition why they were so desperate to sign him.

Now, in 2023 Chelsea are looking to sign Enzo Fernandez on deadline day with Benfica in action on the day potentially scuppering plans. Benfica kick off less than two hours before the window closes.

Chelsea have Fernandez advantage

Chelsea can take advantage of super agent Jorge Mendes in their attempts to sign Enzo Fernandez. Having fallen short of agreeing a deal earlier in the window the Blues are now back in key talks with Benfica.

Mendes, who offered Todd Boehly the services of Cristiano Ronaldo last summer, has a good relationship with the club and is acting as an intermediary for the ongoing negotiations.

It gives Chelsea an avenue for proceeding that they didn't have previously and may well allow them to complete a deal that appeared to be heading nowhere just days ago.
