Chelsea morning headlines as Leicester repeat transfer trick for Chilwell, Lampard's challenge

Here are the Chelsea morning headlines for Monday, June 8.

Chelsea step up Chilwell interest

Leicester City are hoping to secure a huge transfer fee from Chelsea for Ben Chilwell.

According to the Mirror, Leicester are using the same tactic that got them a world record sum for Harry Maguire last summer.

The Foxes refused to name a price for Maguire, instead allowing Manchester United to keep increasing their bid until they settled on an £80million fee.

Now Frank Lampard is reportedly stepping up his chase for the 23-year-old left back - who may cost him a similar amount. Chilwell currently has 11 England caps.

Werner impresses observers

Timo Werner is close to completing his move to Chelsea - with Frank Lampard’s side in advanced talks.

The RB Leipzig striker is expected to agree a five-year contract at Stamford Bridge imminently.

Liverpool were widely expected to sign Werner this summer and their manager Jurgen Klopp described him as "a great player", adding that the Reds did not make a move for him because it was not the right time.

"There are a lot of good players on this planet," Klopp told Sky Germany. "Timo Werner is a great player, Kai Havertz is a great player.

"Right time, opportunity - everything has to come together. Six, seven weeks ago, we didn't know if we could play again this year. If we hadn't played the second half of the season, we would have thought, 'OK, when can you really play football again?'

"And now it starts right away."

Lampard on Chelsea challenge

Lampard says his main challenge is not pushing his players too hard when the Premier League begins again.

Their first match back is away to Aston Villa on June 21, and then they take on defending champions Manchester City on Thursday, June 25.

Chelsea have nine Premier League games remaining - and are still in the FA Cup, with all matches to be completed by the start of August.

That means Lampard is being very careful not to ask too much of his squad as yet.

"The players have worked very hard in training when asked to, to try to bridge the gap a bit quicker than we normally would do,” he told the club’s official website . “As coaching staff and medically we have to have the balance right to make sure we don’t push too much.

"There have been challenges along the way, but that’s what football is. The players are getting fitter and we hope come Aston Villa we will be ready to go, with the mindset and the physical side of it to take on the games which are going to come thick and fast."
