Chelsea make Levi Colwill move amid Liverpool transfer interest

Chelsea have offered highly rated defender Levi Colwill a new contract amid interest from Premier League rivals like Liverpool, a new report has claimed.

Liverpool make a flying start to the summer when they wrapped up a £35m deal for Brighton & Hove Albion midfielder Alexis Mac Allister. And they are now set to bolster their engine room further after making it clear they are going to trigger the £60m release clause in the contract of RB Leipzig star Dominik Szoboszlai.

When, as expected now, the Reds complete the Szoboszlai transfer, it remains to be seen whether they will target a third midfielder. But what is clear is that it appears Jurgen Klopp would like to add to his backline before the 2023-24 campaign kicks off.

Of the defenders who have been linked with a move to Anfield, one player who definitely has admirers within the club is Colwill. The 20-year-old, who is currently part of the England squad at the European Under-21 Championship alongside Liverpool duo Harvey Elliott and Curtis Jones, impressed last season while on loan at Brighton.

Brighton would like to make Colwill's move to the AMEX permanent and have already had a club-record £40m bid rejected while Premier League champions Manchester City are also said to be keen on his services.

Now the Evening Standard are exclusively reporting that Chelsea have offered the youngster a new contract. However, they also state he wants to speak to the club's new manager Mauricio Pochettino before deciding his future.

The Stamford Bridge outfit insist that Colwill is not for sale and Pochettino is said to be a fan. However, the report claims that Colwill wants assurances from Chelsea over his role in their squad next season.

Pochettino already has Thiago Silva, Benoit Badiashile, Wesley Fofana and Trevoh Chalobah as his main centre-backs options and the Evening Standard write that Colwill does not want to be seen as a back-up, especially at a time when he is trying to catch the eye of senior England manager Gareth Southgate.

Whether he would get regular first-team football at Liverpool remains to be seen. Klopp currently has Virgil van Dijk, Ibrahima Konate, Joel Matip and Joe Gomez at his disposal.
