Chelsea make Gabriel Slonina transfer decision amid Edouard Mendy and Kepa Arrizabalaga concerns

Chelsea have made a decision regarding Gabriel Slonina's future for the remainder of the Premier League season. Graham Potter has so far opted to select Kepa Arrizabalaga ahead of Edouard Mendy since replacing Thomas Tuchel as manager.

There remain concerns regarding both senior goalkeepers at Stamford Bridge with Mendy suffering injuries and poor form, whilst Kepa has never fully convinced supporters since his mega-money move from Athletic Bilbao. Talks over a new deal for the Senegalese goalkeeper have stalled and there is a growing expectation that Mendy will leave the Blues this summer.

Slonina arrived with plenty of potential but given the competition between Mendy and Kepa, Chelsea felt it was best for him to continue his development with Chicago Fire until January. The American goalkeeper returned to London for a two-week training camp in October before making his U.S. Men's National Team (USMNT) debut on Wednesday in a friendly, highlighting his talent with a great save on his first appearance.

Slonina completed a £12million move from Chicago Fire in the summer transfer window with Christian Pulisic playing a key role in helping the 18-year-old decide to join Chelsea. Todd Boehly has brought a focus to sign young, talented players that can develop into world-class stars and play a key role in Chelsea's future success.

Slonina is considered to be one of the most promising talents having kept 13 clean sheets in his debut season in the MLS. The teenager played every minute of Chicago Fire's 2022 league campaign, making a total of 34 appearances.

According to Fabrizio Romano, the 18-year-old is set to stay at Stamford Bridge until the summer and will not be loaned back out. This could see him challenge Kepa and Mendy for a starting spot in Potter's team given the uncertainty over both players' futures at the club.

Slonina has already pleased Chelsea fans after his signing last summer with a classy message posted on social media following the announcement of his signing. Slonina tweeted: "Honoured to join such a massive club with so much history.

"It’s a privilege to wear the badge of the best side in London. Thank you to all the fans for the warm welcome. Can’t wait to get started."
