Chelsea legend tells Graham Potter what must happen with Mason Mount amid Thomas Tuchel sacking

Graham Potter has a big task on his hand after being appointed Chelsea Head coach following Thomas Tuchel's sacking on Wednesday.

Potter held positive talks with Blues' co-owner Todd Boehly in London on Wednesday evening as Chelsea looked to swiftly appoint a new manager, football.london understands. The decision to sack Tuchel came after tensions grew between Boehly and the German manager, with a defeat to Zagreb coming as Tuchel's last game in charge.

Potter is set to take charge with immediate effect, bringing his coaching staff with him to Stamford Bridge as a new era begins in west London. A number of first-team players have underperformed so far this season, with Potter needing to make a huge decision in a number of key areas of the squad.

Chelsea legend Gus Poyet has underlined Mason Mount as one of those players that needs to step up his performances and help Potter turn the Blues' form around. Speaking to Midnite, Poyet said: "Mason, in my opinion and respect to the coaches, Mount should have a certain position in the team and should play 90% of the time in that position.

"When you have a player like that who plays in different positions, it's hard for him to play at his best. When Mount plays close to the strikers, close to the box, Chelsea create an enormous number of chances to score goals, when you play him too wide or deep, he's a different player. That's my humble opinion."

Mount was the club's top scorer last term but has so far failed to register a goal or assist in Chelsea's opening seven fixtures in all competitions. The 23-year-old is considered one of the top talents at Stamford Bridge and will be key to the club's future success, with a new contract thought to be discussed in the coming weeks for Mount.
