Chelsea Ladies were eliminated from the Champions League after defeat at Wolfsburg in the second leg of their last 16 tie.

They were 2-1 behind from the first leg after an own goal from Claire Rafferty and Caroline Graham Hansen’s 78th-minute effort handed Wolfsburg the advantage for the return in Germany and progress was put further out of reach when Vanessa Bernauer hit the top corner from 25 yards.

Wolfsburg almost doubled their lead in the first half through Babett Peter but she shot just wide of the post. Chelsea picked up their game and nearly had their reward just after half-time when England’s Eniola Aluko hit the underside of the crossbar. They went close again through Fran Kirby when Gemma Davison’s cross found her in the box but her volley sailed over.

The 2013 and 2014 European champions were not to be denied and Chelsea’s season ended when another own goal from Rafferty, after Graham Hansen’s shot hit the post, put Wolfsburg through to the last eight 4-1 on aggregate.
