Chelsea have gained significant edge over Man Utd, Liverpool and others in transfer window again

Kurt Zouma's departure from Chelsea to West Ham helped ensure that this is the fourth time the Blues have reaped in over £100m of income from transfers across a season in ten years.

The Frenchman joined the Hammers this summer in a deal reportedly worth £29.8 million, as part of an overall windfall generated by the sales of players such as Tammy Abraham, Fikayo Tomori and Marc Guehi.

While a lot of this summer's income owes to the excellent work of the Blues' academy, Chelsea director Marina Granovskaia has conducted yet another transfer window masterclass to achieve a feat that has proven beyond Manchester United and Manchester City in that same period of time.

Only four clubs - including Chelsea - have been able to recuperate over £100m in transfer fees across a season since the 2011/12 season. Liverpool, Tottenham and Arsenal have all only managed to reach that figure once in the last decade, reinforcing Chelsea's ability to sell at significant prices.

From the four spells, Granovskaia's statement sales feature Eden Hazard's move to Real Madrid, Nemanja Matic to Manchester United and David Luiz to Paris Saint Germain, who all went on to underline the director's strong negotiation skills in the market.

Luiz swapped Stamford Bridge for Le Parc des Princes in 2014 in a deal worth £44.5m, the biggest sale from Chelsea's first transfer window where over £100m was generated in sales.

However, despite being named in the 2014 FIFA FIFPro World XI, the Blues signed Luiz just two years later for £31.5m and went on to win a second Europa League, a second FA Cup and the Premier League.

The second transfer window where the Blues exceeded £100m in transfer fees was in 2017/18 which saw the dramatic exits of Nemanja Matic and Diego Costa for a combined £94m alone.

The pair joined Manchester United and Atletico Madrid, respectively, and have both since failed to hit the same heights they once did in west London.

Chelsea's dealings in that period underline Granovskaia's excellent ability to offload players just as their market value starts to decrease, helping the Blues to avoid losing players on free transfers or for reduced fees.

A perfect example came to fruition in 2019 when Hazard left to join Real with just one year remaining on his Chelsea contract yet the Blues were able to bring in a fee that could exceed £150m if several bonus-related clauses are met.
