Chelsea given Champions League boost as Valencia preparations thrown further into chaos

Chelsea will return to the Champions League after a year's absence on Tuesday night.

The Blues finished in the top four in the Premier League last season and won the Europa League, both of which secured their place in Europe's elite competition.

Europa League victory gave them a place in pot one of the draw, as they were paired with Ajax, Valencia and Lille in group H.

The Blues' campaign gets under way on Tuesday when Spanish side Valencia visit Stamford Bridge.

But they have not exactly enjoyed a good preparation for the match in west London.

After their first three games of the season, Valencia had four points, having won one, drawn one and lost one.

It was not a good enough start for manager Marcelino, who was sacked last week.

Albert Celades came in as his replacement, but his start as boss could not have been much more difficult.

As if Chelsea in the Champions League as the second game of Celades reign was not bad enough, Valencia had to go to the Camp Nou on Saturday to face Barcelona.

And Celades could not change the club's fortunes in the first 90 minutes of his tenure.

In fact, if changing the manager in the lead up to the Champions League was not ideal preparation, Valencia shipping five against Barca made things even more chaotic.

Barca won 5-2 at the Camp Nou, with Luis Suarez scoring twice.

Chelsea will be hoping to pile the misery on when they welcome the Spaniards to west London on Tuesday.
