Chelsea explain why Mason Mount is being left on bench amid Liverpool transfer interest

Chelsea interim head coach Bruno Saltor has expressed the club's love for Mason Mount after the midfielder was strongly linked with a move to Liverpool.

Mount is out of contract in 2024 and has rejected several offers to remain in West London. Now the Reds are said to be ready to pounce on the England international's situation.

Chelsea and Liverpool played out a boring 0-0 draw on Tuesday night at Stamford Bridge. But Mount never made it on to the pitch.

The 24-year-old also spent 90 minutes on the bench as Chelsea went down 2-0 at home to Aston Villa on Saturday in what proved to be manager Graham Potter's final match in charge. After that game, and then against Liverpool, Mount did a lap of applause at the final whistle.

And explaining why Mount has not been used, Saltor said: ""He was available, but he's coming back from an injury. It's always challenging bringing players back from injury. He can play in different positions. He's a great player. We love him.

"He's a leader. He loves the club. You can see he's an important player for us. He will have minutes for sure with anyone."

Jurgen Klopp is planning on making changes to the Liverpool midfield during the summer window after a disappointing campaign for his side, which could see them miss out on Champions League football.

As well as Mount, the Reds are interested in Borussia Dortmund's Jude Bellingham and have also been linked with Wolves' Matheus Nunes.
