Chelsea could have just handed Bristol City, Celtic and Rangers a massive transfer boost

Bristol City may be one of a number of clubs to have been handed a transfer boost by Chelsea.

The Blues last night gave David Luiz a new contract at the club, with the defender signing a two-year extension to his deal.

It is a boost for the Stamford Bridge club, who have been slapped with a transfer ban that leaves them unable to sign any new players this summer.

Yet it could also positively impact Bristol City's chances of keeping hold of Tomas Kalas.

Kalas was on loan at the Robins from Chelsea this season and impressed, forming a strong partnership with Adam Webster.

Unlike in the case of Jay Dasilva's loan from Chelsea, the Robins do not have an option to buy Kalas now that his loan has finished.

Yet it was reported earlier this week that Kalas wants to seek a permanent move away from Chelsea, with the 25-year-old having been sent on seven loans in eight years.

The Blues' transfer ban impacted this a little, however.

'He will hope to break into the Chelsea squad' - Experts rate Bristol City's chance of buying Jay Dasilva

Luiz was out of contract this summer and, with Chelsea unable to strengthen in the transfer window, they would have been relying on squad depth to replace the Brazilian.

That could have meant keeping hold of Kalas to boost their numbers at the back - although, realistically, the likes of Kurt Zouma, who was on loan at Everton, would have still been above the Czech international in the pecking order.

Yet Luiz's new contract means it is difficult to envisage Kalas getting much game time next season, meaning the Blues might be more open to letting him leave - either on a permanent deal or another loan.

There is plenty of competition for his signature, though, with Celtic and Rangers both linked alongside the Robins.
