Chelsea could face nightmare scenario in Champions League draw despite European glory

Chelsea got their hands on the Champions League trophy for the first time since 2012 on Sunday, overcoming Manchester City 1-0 at the Estadio do Dragao in Porto.

The Blues spurned early chances through Timo Werner before fellow German Kai Havertz netted the only goal of the game with a composed strike three minutes before half-time.

Thomas Tuchel's side then saw out the remainder of the match with relative ease, reducing City to just one shot on target over the course of 90 minutes.

Chelsea's triumph in Portugal secured them as a pot one team for next season's Champions League, joining the likes of German giants Bayern Munich and Spanish champions Atletico Madrid in the draw's top bracket.

The Blues are one of 25 teams to have qualified for the group stages, but who could they face in the opening stage?

Here, football.london has taken a close look at the sides in pot two that Chelsea could be drawn against.

What teams are in pot two?

Fellow English sides Manchester United and Liverpool will be in next season's pot two with the two rivals finishing above Chelsea in the Premier League this season, ending the campaign in second and third respectively.

Champions League rules stipulate that teams from the same nation cannot face each other in the group stages so the Blues will avoid their Premier League rivals in the group stage.

However, two teams that Chelsea can come up against are Spanish giants Barcelona and Real Madrid. The two superpowers have won a combined 18 Champions League titles and after finishing behind Atletico Madrid in La Liga's title race they find themselves in pot two for next season's competition.

Both teams would represent a tough task for Thomas Tuchel's men, but they have had success against both sides in the last decade, defeating Real Madrid in this season's semi-finals and knocking out Barcelona at the same stage in 2012.

Another team that the Blues have previous Champions League history with are last season's runners-up PSG, with Mauricio Pochettino's side joining Los Blancos and Barca in pot two.

PSG, who finished behind Lille in Ligue 1 this season, knocked the new European Champions out at the Round of 16 stages in both 2014/15 and 2015/16.

The Blues could also be drawn against Juventus, Borussia Dortmund or Sevilla, who all will be in pot two for the 2021/22 campaign.

Dortmund managed to finish third in the Bundesliga after a strong finish to the season, winning their last seven league games.

Meanwhile, both Juventus and Sevilla scraped into Europe's elite competition, finishing fourth in Serie A and La Liga respectively.
