Chelsea are involved in a three-way battle with Manchester United and Leicester City for the final two spots in the Premier League top four.
The Blues are in pole position to take one of the Champions League qualification spots as they sit in third, a point ahead of their two rivals.
With Leicester having played a game more than Chelsea, it means one more victory will be enough to secure the Blues a top-four position.
Chelsea face a tough final two fixtures as they travel to Liverpool on Wednesday before hosting Wolverhampton Wanderers on the final day of the season.
Yet a win in either of those games will not only secure them a top-four spot but also potentially set-up an unlikely scenario that would force Manchester United and Leicester City to play-off for fourth spot.
The Manchester Evening News report that a certain set of results, which are not beyond the realms of possibility, could well mean United and the Foxes have to face a winner-takes-all clash after the season finishes.
Manchester United face West Ham this week before facing Leicester in the final game of the season.
The two sides are level on points and goal difference, with a similar amount of goals scored and conceded.
It means that, if United beat West Ham 5-3 to go three points clear of Leicester, they will have scored one goal more and conceded one less than Brendan Rodgers side.
If Leicester then beat United 1-0 on the final day of the season, then the two teams would finish level on points, goal difference, goals scored and goals conceded.
Crucially, after Manchester United beat Leicester 1-0 earlier in the season, they would also be level on head-to-head records.
It would mean the two teams would have to be separated by a play-off game in order to see who finishes fourth.
That would be an unprecedented scenario and, whilst stranger things have happened, the odds for every result needed for this to happen are a massive 1,260/1.
