Chelsea boss Graham Potter's transfer signings at Swansea City and what happened to them next

Swansea City fans will no doubt have an eye on Chelsea's progress following the appointment of Graham Potter as boss at Stamford Bridge.

The Englishman is fondly remembered by the Jack Army for his brief time with the Swans which included some thrilling team goals and plenty of edge-of-the-seat action in what was a turbulent period for the club following relegation from the Premier League.

However, the Swans' transfer business under Potter summed up a testing period for the club. Here's what happened to the players brought to Swansea by the 47-year-old.

Joel Asoro (Sunderland)

There was plenty of excitement around the arrival of Swedish attacker Asoro who joined from Sunderland for £2m.

But it was a deal that failed to live up to expectations as Asoro found himself on the fringes for long periods. He made 17 appearances in all competitions during his debut season in south Wales and struggled to make a telling impact.

He was duly loaned out to Groningen where he netted three times in 15 Eredivisie outings, and his final appearance for Swansea came in a 2-0 Carabao Cup loss to Newport County at Rodney Parade at the beginning of the 2020/21 season.

Following a deeply frustrating loan stint with Genoa, Asoro joined Stockholm-based Djurgårdens IF.

Barrie McKay (Nottingham Forest)

The Scot clearly had talent, and Swansea were willing to stump up £1.5m to bring the attacker to south Wales.

However, as with Asoro, it didn't really work out in the long-term for McKay at Swansea. His most fruitful spell came under Potter who left after just one season at the club.

A thunderbolt of a strike at Bolton Wanderers was undoubtedly the pick of the bunch on what was a rather underwhelming highlights reel of McKay's Swansea career - which saw him score three goals in 39 appearances.

He had two loan spells with Fleetwood Town before joining Hearts on a free transfer in the summer of 2021.

Bersant Celina (Manchester City)

Unquestionably the most successful of Potter's signings, the Kosovan produced some memorable moments during his debut campaign at the club.

Footage of his strike to round off a sublime team move in the FA Cup clash with his former club Man City continues to be circulated on social media sites, and it perfectly typified what Swansea were all about under Potter.

He ended his first season at the club having scored eight times in 42 appearances in all competitions, but the exit of Potter in the summer of 2019 coincided with Celina's decline as he failed to establish himself as a regular under Steve Cooper.

Following a frustrating year in which he didn't manage to score after the opening month of the 2019/20 season, Celina joined Ligue 1 outfit Dijon on a permanent deal. His year in France was torrid to say the least as the attacker failed to score in 32 appearances for the club and was also red carded as Dijon were relegated.

Their response was to send Celina on loan to former club Ipswich Town for a season while he is now on loan with Turkish outfit Kasımpaşa S.K.

Declan John (Rangers)

The Welshman desperately struggled to make an impact after joining from Rangers and found game time limited, even after Martin Olsson's season was ended prematurely by an Achilles injury.

Nevertheless, John did manage to remain in Ryan Giggs' Wales plans, although it went from bad to worse for the left-back at club level as he failed to make a single appearance during a loan spell with Sunderland having featured just five times for the Swans in the opening half of the 2019/20 season.

His fortunes improved in the next season though as John helped Bolton Wanderers seal promotion from League Two before joining the Trotters on a permanent deal in 2021 following a season-loan loan at the club.

Cameron Carter-Vickers (loan from Tottenham Hotspur)

The defender took time to settle at the club but went on to become a key player as the Swans improved in the second-half of the season under Potter.

The United States of America international made 33 appearances in all competitions for the club before returning to Tottenham.

He was never able to force his way into the Spurs side though, and after loan spells with Stoke City, Luton Town, Bournemouth and Celtic, Carter-Vickers joined the latter on a permanent basis in June after helping Ange Postecoglou's side to clinch the Scottish Premiership title.

(List includes players to feature for the first team. Yan Dhanda joined prior to Potter's arrival at Swansea.)
