Chef seriously injured in sword attack at late night takeaway

A chef's thumb was almost severed when he was attacked with a sword at takeaway restaurant.

Mohammad Akhtar needed 40 stitches and a skin graft after he was repeatedly hit with the weapon by a businessman thug.

Property developer Joseph Fitzsimmons launched the savage attack after arriving at Madras Cottage in Blantyre late at night.

Hamilton Sheriff Court heard last week that Mr Akhtar tried to take refuge in the kitchen to escape the thug, but he followed him, the Daily Record reports.

When Fitzsimmons, 45, was arrested, he told police: "What happened had to happen. There is a right and a wrong, and sometimes it's different from the law."

Fitzsimmons admitted striking Mohammad Akhtar repeatedly on the hand and face with a sword to his severe injury, permanent disfigurement and permanent impairment on April 5 last year.

The court heard that Mohammad was working when Fitzsimmons entered the takeaway at about 10pm.

Prosecutor Jennifer Cunningham said: "He swung the sword towards Mr Akhtar who put his hands up to defend himself and was struck on the right hand. Mr Akhtar retreated to the kitchen area and the accused followed him behind the counter and struck him on the face with the handle of the sword."

Fitzsimmons fled but police stopped his car in East Kilbride and found the sword inside.

Ms Cunningham told the court the victim "can no longer work as a chef or lift his children".

Mohammad also lost a tooth and suffered a mouth injury.

Sheriff Andrew McIntyre deferred sentence until August for a criminal justice social work report. Fitzsimmons was remanded in custody.
