Cheap £2 spider deterrent expert 'swears by' to repel bugs during mating season

Spider mating season is a frightful time where beasties crawl out of the woodwork, but one expert swears by an easy £2 hack that will naturally deter them.

Enlisting the help of strong smells will help stop spiders from coming into your home, according to the founder of luxury bedroom brand French Bedroom, Georgia Metcalfe.

The bugs don't like pungent smells, so a simple peppermint oil spray could keep them away whilst creating a nice home fragrance.

Georgia, who 'swears by' the tip, explained: "Worrying about spiders in our room can have a negative effect on our mindset, in turn reducing sleep and increasing stress levels.

"Following this tip will retain your bedroom as a peaceful sanctuary and prevent sleepless nights. I swear by these tips and recommend to anyone I know who has spider troubles.

"As they smell with their legs, pungent scents, essential oils, and even lemon peel are great ways to keep spiders at bay for only a few pounds and without using chemicals."

Peppermint oil can be bought for as little as £2 online and in other outlets, the Express reported. Amazon sells the product for just £1.98, and Waitrose sells Tisserand peppermint essential oil for £3.50.

Combining the oil with water, adding it to a diffuser or dropping the scent into laundry are all recommended techniques that won’t harm the spider.

Creating a spray mixture using a few drops of peppermint oil with water and a dash of white vinegar should help keep the critters at bay. The reason the strong scent of peppermint oil repels spiders is because they're sensitive to strong smells.

The solution can be sprayed lightly onto the inside of curtains and corners of carpets but caution should be taken when it comes to spraying on furniture as it could cause damage.
