Chart of the day: Two Aussies among world's top 20 fastest-rising billionaires

With a personal fortune estimated to be $US149 billion, Amazon's Jeff Bezos is the world's richest person, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index.

But despite the stellar 50 per cent rise in the Amazon share price this year, he's not the billionaire with the fastest-growing bank balance in the year to date.

The top two on that list are the co-founders of Chinese smartphone and gadget maker Xiaomi, which only began operations eight years ago.

Of the top 20 biggest winners in 2018:

  • All but one are self-made billionaires
  • Ten are in the technology world
  • Nine were born in China (including two who are now listed as US and Hong Kong nationals)
  • Two are Australians: the Atlassian co-founders Scott Farquhar and Mike Cannon-Brookes
