Chart of the day: Older women driving online gaming boom

The stereotypical online gamer is young and male, but smartphones have brought a new player to the gaming world.

According to Nielsen, baby boomers make up nearly a quarter of Australia's 14.5 million gamers — more than any other age category.

Nielsen says there are 1.9 million Australian women over 55 who play online games — and they spent an average of almost 16 hours gaming in December last year.

The most popular games among women? Candy Crush Saga, Words With Friends and Pokemon Go.

And if you're an older woman who's not loving the games on offer, you can always follow this 82-year-old's example, and make your own.
