The fatal shooting of conservative activist Charlie Kirk at Utah Valley University has exposed deep divisions within American society, potentially creating new opportunities for foreign adversaries to exploit domestic tensions. Kirk, 31, was shot and killed while speaking at a campus event on September 10, 2025, as part of his “American Comeback Tour.” The gunman remains at large despite an ongoing FBI manhunt.
The assassination has intensified concerns about political violence in the United States, with authorities warning that the incident could be used by hostile nations to further destabilize American democracy. Utah Governor Spencer Cox directly addressed these risks during a press conference, stating that foreign powers are actively working to exploit such events. The killing has already sparked chaos in the House of Representatives as politicians blamed each other for the tragedy.
According to Newsweek, Cox warned that America’s adversaries were taking advantage of the situation, saying there was “a tremendous amount of disinformation” being spread online. “What we’re seeing is our adversaries want violence,” Cox said. “We have bots from Russia, China, all over the world, that are trying to instill misinformation and encourage violence.” The governor’s comments highlight how domestic unrest can create opportunities for foreign adversaries to manipulate public perception and heighten political tensions in what experts describe as America’s fractured political landscape.
Foreign reactions reveal exploitation tactics
Russian officials quickly seized on Kirk’s death to advance their own political narratives. Dmitry Medvedev, deputy chairman of Russia’s Security Council, blamed the killing on “left-wing liberal scum who support Banderite Kiev,” attempting to link the assassination to Ukraine supporters. Kirill Dmitriev, a Putin ally, posted on social media that there had been “an attack on Charlie Kirk, one of the most ardent conservative leaders known for his positive statements about Russia.”

Chinese political analysts also weighed in on the incident, with some pointing to it as evidence of America’s systemic problems. Yi Shen, a professor at Fudan University’s Research Center for the Governance of Global Cyberspace, warned that political polarization in the United States was likely to deepen following Kirk’s death. He noted that while both political sides would condemn the violence, each would blame different causes, creating a cycle that “poses enormous risks to society and the nation as a whole.”
The assassination occurs amid broader strategic challenges facing the United States, including tensions with China over Taiwan and the South China Sea, ongoing conflict in Ukraine, and concerns about foreign interference in American politics. Intelligence assessments have previously revealed Chinese, Russian, and Iranian efforts to influence U.S. political discourse through disinformation campaigns. Reports suggest the murder mystery may involve foreign intelligence, further complicating the investigation.
Kirk was the co-founder and CEO of Turning Point USA, a conservative youth organization that played a significant role in mobilizing young voters. His death has prompted condemnation from political leaders across the spectrum, with President Trump ordering flags to be flown at half-staff and promising to award Kirk the Presidential Medal of Freedom posthumously. The State Department has also warned foreign nationals against glorifying the violence, threatening visa revocations for those who do so.
