Charlie Austin set to join West Brom ending any speculation of a Newcastle move

Southampton forward Charlie Austin is set to join West Bromwich Albion, putting to bed any speculation he could join Newcastle United.

Chronicle Live reported on July 24 that the 30-year-old had been offered to Newcastle as Southampton looked to sell the former QPR and Burnley striker.

Austin was deemed surplus to requirements at St Mary's following a fallout with manager Ralph Hassenhutl and he was left out of their squad who travelled to Austria during pre-season.

He was one of a number of names on a lengthy list of targets Steve Bruce and Lee Charnley looked at but it is believed Newcastle decided against making a move in the end.

It means Austin, who has scored 34 goals in 106 Premier League appearances, will now drop down to the Championship and link up with Slaven Bilic's new look West Brom.

Austin is on his way to West Midlands to discuss the move today and the Baggies are set to secure his permanent transfer before tonight's 5pm deadline.
