Charli xcx has responded to fans who criticised her use of auto-tune during her performance at Glastonbury, describing it as “the most boring take ever”.
The musician sounded off on her critics after taking to the stage as one of the headliners at the music event, during which she mostly performed tracks from her 2024 album Brat.

Charli made waves during the set when she burnt the infamous Brat curtain and enlisted Gracie Abrams as her “Apple” dancer, but some fans took umbrage with her opting for auto-tune and “barely singing”, one critic wrote on X.
“Charli xcx might as well just be an AI bot,” another user added. “Basic lyrics and a tonne of auto-tune”.

Charli took to X(cx) to describe the commentary as “boring”, but added she is nonetheless “fascinated” by the fan reaction to her “deliberate” use of auto-tune.
“Really enjoying these really enjoying these boomer vibe comments on my Glastonbury performance. It’s super fascinating to me,” the singer wrote.
“Like the idea that singing with deliberate autotune makes you a fraud or that not having a traditional band suddenly means you must not be a ‘real artist’ is like, the most boring take ever,” she added.
“Yawn sorry just fell asleep xx.”
While the fan reaction was enough to induce a beautifully auto-tuned yawn from the singer (someone sample it and put it on a remix, stat), Charli said she “enjoy[s] the discourse” because it is reflective of the kind of art she hopes to make.

“IMO the best art is divisive and confrontational and often evolves into truly interesting culture rather than being like kind of ok, easily understood and sort of forgettable,” she wrote.
Honestly, she has a point, since Charli going without auto-tune is like me going without my sixth coffee every morning… unthinkable and TRULY ABSURD (sorry, it just kicked in).
In any case, it’s not the first time Charli has weighed in on the fanfare stemming from her Brat era, which basically overran our algorithms and had us dreaming in the colour code #8ACE00.
From denouncing her fans’ criticism of Taylor Swift while touring the album to leaking her team’s Brat marketing strategies, Charli has never shied away from the discourse around her work.
Just don’t expect her to respond in anything other than glitchy auto-tune.
