Charlene White is the first contestant to be voted off I'm A Celebrity after quitting Bushtucker Trial

Charlene White is the first contestant to be booted off I'm A Celebrity... Get Me Out Of Here! The journalist and broadcaster received the most votes to leave the Aussie jungle on the long-running ITV series, which returned Down Under for 2002 after spending two years based in Wales thanks to Covid travel restrictions.

Her departure came after she bowed out of tonight's Bushtucker Trial early by yelling out the name of the show. The 42-year-old Londoner admitted to having "panicked" during the Watery Grave challenge alongside '80s pop icon Boy George, causing her to throw in the towel.

Describing the task as "my worst nightmare," the news presenter needed to climb down inside a series of half flooded underground tombs and work with the Culture Club singer to release 11 stars. Host Ant McPartlin explained, "The person in the first tomb will move a magnet to move the stars around the maze and through to the second tomb.

"The celebrity in there will need to work the stars around their maze until they can be released. Once you get a star, get it in your star bag - only stars in your star bag at the end of time will count."

However, while George kept his cool as eels, water spiders and mud crabs were added to mix, Charlene began to doubt herself. “I’m not sure I can do this - I’m trying, oh God I’m really trying, " she said.

When Ant told her time was ticking, she replied firmly, "I know that, Anthony" before finally calling out, "I'm A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here!" As a result the trial was ended and the pair left with only two stars to take back to camp.

"I was fine up until something else fell on me and I think I panicked," she said afterwards. "I thought I got my head around it and then something else came and I crumbled.

"I’m really disappointed in myself and feel like I’ve let the team down," sobbed the homesick Charlene. "I really miss my kids."

She added that she agreed to enter the jungle "to feel like I can conquer fear and really challenge myself and just be able to get through stuff. But if I'm not doing that, what’s the point in me being here?" she added.

I’m A Celebrity…Get Me Out Of Here! watch the next live episode tomorrow at 9.10pm (Saturday) on ITV1 and ITV Hub
