Charity working in war-torn and impoverished countries opens food bank in Birmingham

A charity which supports people in some of the poorest countries in the world has opened a food bank in Birmingham. As reported by Birmingham Live, the Human Relief Foundation (HRF) works in places like Iraq, Yemen and parts of Africa.

Bosses said they felt they had a "moral duty" to help out in the Midlands and recognised many people were struggling. Former Prime Minister Gordon Brown said it was an indication of the severity of the cost-of-living crisis. And it comes after the Government was accused of favouring the rich in its mini-budget on Friday.

"After a summer of doing nothing the government has finally done nowhere near enough," said Mr Brown in a tweet. "Things are so bad that Human Relief, which has spent 30 years focused entirely on aid to the world’s poorest countries, has opened a food bank in Birmingham."

The charity said: "Here at the Human Relief Foundation we greatly appreciate the hardship many individuals and families are facing on a daily basis with rising food costs and living costs. We believe we have a moral duty to help those at home and abroad.

"HRF recognises the importance of food banks to millions of people in the UK and how many families go hungry and are unable to afford essentials. In an amazing collaboration with His Church charity, and the wider community in Birmingham we have opened our first food bank. "
