Chargers LB Drue Tranquill set for expanded role

You can expect to see Chargers linebacker Drue Tranquill on the field more often.

Defensive coordinator Gus Bradley said that the rookie will be a part of a three-man linebacker rotation with Denzel Perryman and Thomas Davis, playing both MIKE and WILL, per The Athletic’s Daniel Popper.

Tranquill played 20 snaps in last Sunday’s loss to the Broncos, replacing Perryman in the third quarter after a few defensive woes. He also played in place of Davis, who was dealing with a groin injury.

There’s no denying that the former Notre Dame product has been the best rookie in this year’s draft class thus far.

Tranquill garnered the coaching staff’s attention right off the bat when he arrived to rookie minicamp with his high football intelligence and play style at the position.

He stood out in training camp and preseason action, not only as a special teams ace but on the defensive side of the football, leading the team in tackles in nearly every game.

The plan going forward will likely to cut Davis’ snaps, giving him more time to rest and eventually take over for Perryman at the starting MIKE. This would allow Kyzir White to start at WILL permanently.
