The Chargers made a series of moves this offseason to construct one of the most complete rosters that they’ve had. It appears that the team is done with acquisitions, as their sights are now on training camp and beyond to get ready for the 2019 season.
But is there still a possibility that they could make one more move prior to, such as bringing back former tight end Antonio Gates? It’s a mystery and one thing that’s certainly been on supporter’s minds. Some are against it, while others are for it, including wide receiver Keenan Allen.
Allen made an appearance on FS1’s Skip Bayless and Shannon Sharpe’s show “Undisputed” Tuesday. He was asked by Sharpe if Gates is coming back for one more year and Allen responded with, “I hope so, man. I already miss Gates in the locker room already at OTAs.”
The 38-year old TE was brought back this past season on a one-year deal after being released last May to serve as an insurance for Hunter Henry, as he suffered a season-ending injury.
Despite the age, Gates managed to show some promise, outplaying Virgil Green and finishing the regular season with 28 receptions for 333 yards and two touchdowns.
Gates did mention earlier on that he didn’t see himself ending his career on the note that Los Angeles did after losing to the Patriots in the AFC Divisional Round.
The idea of having the veteran tight end back for one more year is enticing and one that can certainly happen. Even though the Chargers have Henry back and Green as the No. 2, the rest of the tight ends on the roster are nothing more than proven blockers.
Gates, who has seen a decline in his production, still has shown that he can be called upon as a red zone and third down target.
The front office and coaching staff most likely still have the thought of bringing him back for his 17th season.
They will likely give it a couple weeks of training camp in hopes that they’re able to find one or two guys aside from Henry emerge as capable pass-catchers to make their decision. If no one shows out, we could see Gates throw on the jersey for one more season.
