John Worboys worked as a taxi driver in London, where he used his position as a taxi driver to sexually assault women. After picking up the women he would tell them that he was celebrating winning a large amount of money, show them a bag of cash as proof, and offer them a glass of champagne.

The champagne was drugged with sedatives and once the drugs had taken effect he would rape or sexually assault them, with the women waking up with little memory of what happened.

Women first began to report suspicious experiences in black cabs from 2002 and between 2002 and 2008, 14 women aged between 18 and 34 reported being assaulted in a taxi with all the cases having similarities.

The police failed to link these cases together and in 2007 Worboys was arrested for the sexual assault of a 19-year-old student, however was released on bail after he claimed the student had been drunk and had kissed him.

John Worboys was arrested again in 2008 and the police found a 'rape kit' in the back of his car which included plastic gloves, vibrators, condoms, sleeping tablets, and an ashtray he used to crush drugs.

Police also found hand-written notes in Worboys' garage outlining his excuses and explanations for if he was arrested again. In 2009 Warboys' trial began and he pleaded not guilty to 23 charges which included rape and sexual assault.

He was convicted of one count of rape, five sexual assaults, one attempted assault, and 12 drugging charges and he was sentenced to life in prison, with a minimum of eight years.

Since his original sentencing, further victims have come forward and the High Court overruled a decision to release him from prison, after he was granted release by the Parole Board in 2017 after serving eight years in prison.

John Worboys remains in prison and in 2013 two victims successfully sued the Met Police for failing to investigate their attacks properly.
