Chandigarh: Policies fine, but show me execution, says UT adviser Dharam Pal

CHANDIGARH: UT adviser Dharam Pal has directed the urban planning department and the municipal corporation (MC) to implement the city’s first-ever parking policy notified in December last year.

“Policies are fine, but show me the implementation,” Pal said. “It is good officials of the UT and MC have made policies like parking policy but what matters is implementation. You can have a number of policies on a number of burning issues, but if these are not implemented, there is no use of them. I have asked UT and MC departments to submit a progress report on parking policy,” he said.

Provision of two gates in plotted areas, mandatory bus stops and community parking lots were some of the key features of the policy. However, most have not been implemented. Retaining controversial proposals such as imposition of congestion charges and linking availability of parking space with vehicle registration, the policy’s focus was on maximising utilisation of spaces through community parking.
